10 Psychologists Share The One Simple Brain Trick That Will Improve Your Mental Health

8 min read

In a Reddit Thread, psychologists of Reddit share what they think is the simplest psychology trick we can learn that makes life easier.

1. Odds are, you already know what it is you need to do to improve your life/health/relationships/job satisfaction/etc. Looking to others to tell you what you already know, to somehow validate what you already believe and create stability, only inhibits progress. We often ask for this validation out of fear of being wrong. Accept that you’re not as stupid as you’ve convinced yourself that you are, take your own advice… For the question isn’t really “What should I do?” but rather “Am I willing to do what I know I need to do, or am I looking for a way to avoid the actual solution?” – Quasita

2. If you want to remember something, think about it while doing something unorthodox. Then when you see the unusual situation your brain will be triggered with what you need to remember. E.g. “Don’t forget to bring in the laundry from outside”, lay the computer chair upside down. – Clarency2

3. Instead of thinking “What can I do to get x”, think “What can I do that makes getting x inevitable?”. This kind of thinking is more fruitful because everything suddenly get’s more realistic. – Atibana

4. Think your way to success. There are a few steps I try to remember in my everyday life:

  1. Think about succeeding
  2. Hold that thought as you do your work, and then
  3. Complete the task

One thing that helps me with my school work: I

  1. Learn the material
  2. Start on the homework, and then
  3. Do the homework early so that I’m not waiting until the last minute.

Taking these steps has really helped me think in a more positive fashion in my life. – Blue_Dog_Democracy

5. Frame things by what you will gain instead of what you will lose. Instead of saying “stop doing meth if you don’t want to be a loser” you can say “if you stop doing meth you’ll be cooler and healthier.” Sorry, that’s the only example I can come up with right now. – Soul_Knife
